SUMMARY:May 24 Meeting
DESCRIPTION:SHORT VERSION: \nIn addition to some updates and announcements\, we will have open discussion about: \n\nthe convention process\, and discussion about who the delegates are supporting\, for the benefit of delegates who are undecided;\ninitial discussions about the referendum questions\, including transgender question\, Fair Share amendment\, paid family and medical leave\, $15 minimum wage\, etc.; and\ndiscussion about the process of the Needham DTC endorsing referendum questions — should we?  and what level of vote should we require — 50%\, or something more? Input will help us generate a policy.\n\nWe will take up a motion regarding transgender rights — whether to support the ballot question\, and whether to co-sponsor local educational events. See longer discussion below. \nLONGER VERSION \nIn addition to announcements and updates\, the meeting will mostly be for discussion among members and friends. Here are the topics: \n\nThe convention on June 1-2: This is a time to allow questions and discussion about process. Also\, delegates will be voting on Governor\, Lieutenant Governor\, and Secretary of State. If anyone is undecided about a particular office and would like to hear why others support a particular candidate for an office\, we can discuss.\nReferendum questions — substance: there are a number of questions that will\, or may\, be on the ballot in November. This will be an opportunity to gauge members’ interest in these questions. Here is a summary of the ballot questions and process:  http://ballotpedia.org/Massachusetts_2018_ballot_measures\nReferendum questions — procedure: a discussion on a general policy for endorsing referendum questions. Should we? Should we require a super-majority?\n\nPROPOSED MOTION RE TRANSGENDER EVENT(S) AND BALLOT QUESTION \nNotwithstanding the discussion above\, we will discuss\, and potentially vote\, on a motion relating to the transgender ballot question (see info below). \nMOTION \nMoved\, that the Needham Democratic Town Committee:  \n(1) authorizes the Needham DTC\, under supervision of the Executive Committee\, to co-sponsor one or more events by the Needham Coalition for Transgender Rights (NCTR) for educating the community about transgender issues; and \n(2) endorses a YES vote on the ballot question for November 2018 to confirm support for An Act Relative to Transgender Anti-Discrimination (Chapter 134 of the Acts of 2016)\, and opposes efforts to repeal that Act. \nEXPLANATIONS \nCo-Sponsoring Event(s) \nThe NCTR is a group in Needham that includes a number of local active community groups.  The stated goal is to help educate the community on transgender rights in Massachusetts\, and the challenge to these rights posed by the upcoming ballot question. \nA community educational event is planned for June (which is why we would vote now)\, and there may be another event in the fall.  The June event will be called “A Community Conversation about Transgender Equality: Learn why it’s important now\,” moderated by The Rev. Irene Monroe (www.irenemonroe.com). The event will include a panel of transgender people/allies and a representative of Freedom MA\, the organization leading the charge to ensure that the movement to repeal Massachusetts transgender anti-discrimination law is defeated.  This event will take place Wednesday\, June 6th \, 7:00 – 8:30 pm\, at First Parish\, Unitarian Universalist Church in Needham. \nThe EC could select which events to participate in\, and on what terms. \nReferendum  \nA YES vote would be consistent with the 2017 Mass Democratic Platform\, page 11\, which envisioned this ballot initiative\, and reads:  “Continuing broad-range support for LGBTQ+ rights\, including protecting the transgender civil rights law and opposing all forms of so-called “conversion therapy.”” \nHere is a link to the referenced transgender civil rights law: http://malegislature.gov/Bills/189/Senate/S2407. \nThe specific ballot question is phrased as a confirmation\, not as a repeal\, and hence the YES vote. \n\n\n\n\nDo you approve of a law summarized below\, which was approved by the House of Representatives by a vote of 117-36 on July 7\, 2016\, and approved by the Senate by a voice vote on July 7\, 2016?\n\n\n\n\nThis referendum would create no new rights\, but only confirm the existing law.

SUMMARY:March 1 Meeting with Immigration Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Immigration Topics in the News (NOTE CHANGE IN USUAL TIME AND LOCATION)\nImmigration has always been a contentious issue\, and has recently been debated in the Senate. But what do DACA\, “chain migration”\, “merit-based” immigration\, TPS\, and “diversity visa lottery” mean? How many people do they affect? What kinds of people? What do other countries do? \nThe meeting will be in the Fellowship Hall of the Congregational Church\, 1154 Great Plain Ave (across Linden St. from the post office). We will start the social time at 7:15 pm\, and plan to start the meeting at 7:45\, with limited business before the presentation. As with all regular DTC meetings\, it is open to all. \nThe most recent draft of the presentation is here: immigration PPT 03-01-2018 final \nIt’s long\, so you might want to view online\, or if you print\, try 4-6 pages per printed page. \nPresenters: \nHeather Yountz is an immigration attorney at Demissie & Church in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Most of her practice is spent protecting her clients from deportation through litigating cases and appeals in state\, federal and immigration courts. She was a named recipient of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) New England Chapter Pro Bono Champion Award\, accepting the award on behalf of the Logan Airport & Litigation Team. Heather regularly speaks about immigration issues at law schools\, local organizations\, and in the media. Heather came to local prominence for her role in challenging the first “Muslim ban” a year ago. \nMichael Diener volunteers with the Irish International Immigrant Center\, the Political Asylum/Immigrant Representation (PAIR) Project\, and Community Legal Services and Counseling Center (“Classic”)\, working with citizenship applicants\, TPS applicants\, refugees\, and asylum applicants. He has delivered written and oral testimony on immigration matters on Beacon Hill.

SUMMARY:2018 Democratic Caucus
DESCRIPTION:This post provides:\n (1) information about the caucus to be held Saturday\, February 3\, to select delegates for the state Democratic convention in Worcester on Saturday\, June 2\,\n (2) information about the add-on delegate process for people under 36\, and certain historically underrepresented groups\, and\n (3) useful links regarding registration and the caucus process. \nCAUCUS \nThe caucus is at 10:00 am at the Newman Elementary School auditorium\, 1155 Central Ave. Doors open by 9:30. You can participate if you are in line by 10 am. You must be a registered Democrat to run as a delegate\, or to vote for delegates (see links below to check or change registration). The caucus is open to the public\, and anyone can attend and observe. Snow date is Saturday\, March 3. \nTo run as a delegate\, please be committed to attending the convention in Worcester on June 2\, all day if necessary (but hopefully not all day!)\, and to paying the $75 convention fee promptly (or submitting a short form for a fee waiver in case of financial hardship). \nThe convention can be important because a candidate needs to get 15% of the convention vote to get on the ballot. \nExpected agenda: \n\nIntroductory information and remarks\nOpen floor for nominations\nBrief statement by caucus nominees\nVote on delegates\nIf elected\, you need to stay to sign acceptance papers\n\nADD-ON DELEGATE PROCESS \nThe state party allows minority\, disabled\, youth\, and LGBT+ individuals to become delegates through an “add-on” process if you are not elected at a caucus\, or even if you do not attend a caucus. You apply after the caucus. Typically\, there are enough add-on slots to accommodate everyone who applies; but if more people apply than the number of slots\, preference is given to people who attended their caucus\, and/or who are involved in Democratic Party organizations. (See link to add-on application below) \n“Youth” is more expansive than you might expect — age 18-35. So\, you need to be (1) a registered or pre-registered Democrat; (2) at least age 18 on or before September 18\, 2018; and (3) under the age of 36 on September 18\, 2018. (See link regarding youth add-on) \nLINKS \nYou can check your status as a voter here: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/VoterRegistrationSearch/MyVoterRegStatus.aspx. \nYou can register or change your registration\, go here: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/OVR/. \nState party documents related to the convention: http://massdems.org/convention/2018-convention\,\n including: \nYouth add-on selection procedure: http://massdems.org/files/Youth-Add-On-Selection-Procedure-1.pdf. \nAdd-on application: http://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeMRcFO_VG86hEpkLrTLhetPaZS3yxKOBaJ5Nxx_vTqMwhJ8w/viewform
